How to Avoid Germs!

Use Hand Sanitizer – Sometimes
I realize there are some controversies in regards to too much anti-bacterial products, however sometimes adequate hand washing facilities are not available.  The next best thing would be hand sanitizer.

Beware the Public Restroom
We all find ourselves in a public restroom from time to time.  It’s important to remember that everyone doesn’t care about cleanliness as much as we do.  Try to touch as few things as possible in the restroom.  If you are carrying a bag or purse, try using hooks instead of placing your items on the floor.  Also, try using a paper towel to touch things like the faucet or the door handle when you turn the water on and off to wash your hands and when exiting the restroom.  It may look silly, but it will keep you healthier.

Zap that Sponge!
Most people use some sort of a kitchen sponge.  These sponges are great for getting food off of dishes and for cleaning up the stove or countertop.  The problem is that a wet sponge + food particles = a breeding ground for bacteria.

As reported in U.S. News & World Report, the University of Florida tested zapping a kitchen sponge in the microwave between 30-120 seconds and found that it inactivated nearly 100 percent of bacteria found in the sponge.  For most households, 30 seconds is adequate enough time to kill bacteria.

Remember these rules:

  • Never place any metallic object in the microwave
  • Always soak the sponge in water prior to placing it in the microwave
  • All items that have been microwaved can be extremely hot, especially when wet!

A Summer Time Reminder for our Four Legged Friends

Remember during the hot summer months to keep around adequate fresh water for our four legged friends and family.
With triple digits temperature, dogs and cats can overheat easily.

    February Healthy Home Tips 2

Bleach can be a friend and not so friendly

People often ask, if they should use bleach on their bathroom grout. There are other product that do a better job of removing stains than bleach. Also if there is a mold or mildew stain under the grout or caulk, the bleach will not remove this stain.

It is important to understand that there are a number of things that household bleach can help you clean. It is also important to realize that not all bleaches are the same. Generic bleach may not have the same quality and cleaning ability as brand names.

The most important thing to remember is that bleach can harm your fabrics and can permanently change the color of your carpet. Also just because I little does a good job, do not over do it.

Make sure that your eyes are protected when cleaning with bleach and wear gloves.

    Good uses for bleach:

    • Removing coffee stains from non-stone counter tops
    • Removing coffee and tea stains from cups and mugs
    • Bleach is great for sanitize cutting boards, counter tops and utensils
    • Bleach can also be used to sanitize non carpeted and non natural stone areas that have been exposed to urine
    • Bleach is great for cleaning coolers, trash cans and containers that have been stained with tomato sauce

Make sure you keep your children and pets away from bleach.

Make sure you read the label complete for dilution instructions and never use bleach on wool.

Try to apply bleach with a sponge or towel, instead of a spray bottle.

Never breath in the bleach vapors.

Never, Never, Never mix bleach with any other household cleaner.

    February Healthy Home Tips

The winter blues are leaving and a lot of people are getting their carpets and rugs cleaned.

Here are a few tips that may help you out.

    • During the drying time, try to avoid walking on the carpet or rugs. If you have to walk on them, before they dry, make sure you only use your sock or bare feet and wipe your feet both before and after you step on the carpet. Keeping a towel on the floor near the carpet will help.
    • If small furniture will be placed back on the carpet or rugs, make sure the carpet or rugs are completely dry. Never place wood or metal on damp ow wet carpet. I could produce a stain or rust that may not come out.

If you need any extra carpet protectors, just ask and we will be happy to give you some.
